’Twas brillig, and the sltihy toves
did gyre en gimble in the wabe.
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand.
Long time the manxome foe he sought.
So rested he bij the Tumtum tree,
And stood a while in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The voorval blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
He chortled in his joy.

’t Was klatsig, en de circaliers
Vlikten en vnosden in de weep.
Intender beefden boeridiers,
En de nijn leusde kleep.

“Mijn zoon, vrees steeds de Jabberglop!
Zijn muil is groot, zijn greep is scherp!
Hoed je voor Joepnoep Vleugelslop!
Ontloop de vallewerp!”

Hij nam het porvaal zwaard ter hand.
Lang zocht hij naar de hellevast.
Bij de Loemploem plant hield hij stand,
En nam een korte rillerast.

En toen hij stond in deuk gepeins,
Kwam Jabberglop, de bek vol vuur,
Gedrochtig met een takke grijns,
Zwavelend in het zuur!

En één! En twee! En door ging door
Het porvaal staal toen mis of raak!
Toen sloeg hij scherp! …Galopgefierd
Bracht hij de kop mee van de draak.

“Hebt ge geknakeld Jabberglop?
Kom aan mijn hart, mijn zilte zoon!
O, zale dag! Extriteflop!”
Hij snorde van toon tot koon.
